Traditionally, plaque and colony counting have been both slow and inefficient. It takes days, if not weeks, before plaques and colonies grow large enough to be seen using traditional methods. What’s more, they had to be grown within Petri dishes and other low-throughput plate formats, each of which had to be tediously counted by eye or separately loaded into a plate reader for analysis.

Not anymore, though! CTL BioSpot™ Analyzers have been specifically optimized for scanning viral plaques and microbial and mammalian colony formation assays. They allow much smaller plaques and colonies to be detected, even against complex backgrounds, thus dramatically reducing the amount of growth time required. What’s more, because they support multiwell plate formats, they can also scan multiple samples in rapid succession.

CTL-BioSpot™ S5 UV Analyzer

The S5 UV Analyzer is CTL’s cutting-edge model. The S5 UV has all the high resolution features of the S5 Micro for work with visible light and its additional UV light source and automated filter changer permit excitation with up to 5 wave lengths in the UV spectrum.  Its zoom lens permits  imaging of the entire bottom of wells of 96 well plates, and zooming in for further detail.  These machines excel at high speed, high-throughput single cell analysis applications.  When analyzing rare events (<1/1000) flow cytometry requires up to 20 minutes per determination per sample, the S5 UV provides the result in <10 seconds per determination (well).  S5 UVs are upgradeable with stackers for high throughput analysis. S5 UV Analyzers, therefore provide the highest versatility for image analysis of various assay types in the microscopic range – using visible or UV light.
